Orientation / Alignment

One of the distinctive aspects about living at Willsmere is the orientation of the complex – it stands at exactly 45 degrees to the cardinal points.

This is a considerable change from the rest of Melbourne, which is primarily oriented at 8 degrees clockwise from true north*. In the case of Willsmere, there were probably several influencing factors:

(a) Topography of the hillside

(b) The decision to face towards the sea and capture breezes

(c) The idea that each room should have at least some sunlight.

HISTORY

History reveals that Willsmere was oriented – by design – for sea breezes and I have noticed on a couple of occasions while living here, the air turning particularly salty as if we were positioned right on the sea itself. This is a rare event but very occasionally, it does occur.


Going back in history, most ancient temples especially those by the Egyptians…
