Ava G.
If you ever find yourself near Smithfield, stop by The Ava Gardner Museum. The caretakers are very friendly and can answer questions about the collection. To see Ava’s mirror and brush is a little disturbing to see. You expect her to return from another room. Some of her dresses and gowns are there as well as a watch she inscribed to her third husband Frank Sinatra who visited her family in North Carolina. Mickey Rooney visited the museum; he was the great historian. Artie Shaw wrote his jazz piece “Grabtown Grapple” for Ava. She was not just an actress; she was an independent night creature, her own boss. No one could tame her. She was well-liked by her peers and worked hard at her craft. She travelled the world and was the beautiful Barefoot Contessa.
